Peach Genealogy - Newsletter, Issue 11

THE PEACH/PEACHEY PROJECT The Electronic Peach Tree Issue 11 Editor: John Harding Peach Peachroot@aol.com

THE CANADIAN PEACHES If you have been watching the news reports that I have, then Nova Scotia's quaint little village, Peggy's Cove, and the rocky terrain of the eastern shore of Canada have been indelibly printed on your hearts and minds. Beautiful country, indeed. My wife keeps urging me to take her there. So, perhaps, next year we may see it for ourselves first hand.

Other than those from the U.S.A., there are more on board our cruise liner from Canada than from any other nation. Most of the 14 Canadians have told us something about their roots.

I would like to take this information now and summarize it. Hopefully, this will help the Canadians, as well as all of us, to see how we may be related to each other.

In my latest book, THE PEACH/PEACHEY MIGRATIONS 1066-1990, I dedicated a chapter to the ancestry of our neighbors to the North. I was able to identify five branches and some of those who descended from them.

Several years ago, in Issue 96 of "The Peach Tree" newsletter, I updated all my information on the Nova Scotia/Newfoundland Peaches. There I identified six separate Peach men who migrated to these North Atlantic provinces. And these were not including those from other parts of Canada.

As a result of the information our passengers have sent, I am able to increase the number of immigrants and branches that we have north of our U.S.A. border. Our Canadian kin who are on board are: JOHN P. PEACH, MARTIN PEACH, MARTIN RICHARD PEACH, DERON PEACH, CYRIL PEACH, JOHN PHILIP PEACH, GEOFF PEACH, ANTHONY PEACH, ROBERT F. PEACH, GREG PEACHY, JUANITA MAGLIO, IRIS WALLACE, CHARLES WOOD and MARILYN WOODWORTH.

Allow me to introduce the ones who have provided me with some details about their genealogy. In doing this, I risk leaving out those who may have sent me information I inadvertantly overlooked. If so, then I apologize in advance. Please let me know if you have something you would like to add to this summary. First, let's note those:

From NOVA SCOTIA

Both ROBERT F. PEACH and DERON PEACH are from the same branch in Nova Scotia. You can find their genealogy outlined on our web page, http://home1.gte.net/tpeach/Genealogy/Genealogy.htm (Go to the bottom of the page to "Peach Genealogy of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia".) We are grateful to ROBERT F. PEACH for doing the intricate research on this and to TODD PEACH for entering it on the web page.

They descend from ROBERT PEACH, who came to Sydney, Nova Scotia, from the county of SOMERSET, England prior to 1800. DERON , who hadn't started researching his ancestry until recently, was not sure how his family fit into the Peach tree. However, putting all he has sent me, together with what ROBERT F. PEACH has researched for our web page, I was able to identify him with this branch.

Immigrant ancestor, ROBERT PEACH, had a son names JAMES PEACH, who in turn had a son named JOHN PEACH, who in turn had a son named HENRY PEACH, who had a son named ROBERT. This all resulted in the birth of DERON PEACH, now a resident of Newfoundland.

MARTIN RICHARD PEACH lives in Montreal. However, his father, FRED PEACH, lives in Clementsport, Nova Scotia. Fred wrote me a nice long letter telling me about his family coming from the now extinct county of RUTLAND, England in 1966. (I'm assuming they first came to Nova Scotia.

These folks, unbeknown to themselves prior to this, are relatives of the NORTHERN MARYLAND BRANCH in the U.S.A. That branch started with a CHARLES PEACH who came from Rutland as early as 1849. WILLIAM J. PEACH of Florida is our lone No.Maryland branch representative on board. Bill, meet your kin.

From NEWFOUNDLAND

We have three Peaches on board who have identified Newfoundland as the beginning of their western ancestry. MARTIN PEACH (not to be confused with the Martin R. Peach mentioned above), lives in the province of Manitoba. He descends from Rev. JOHN SAWFORD PEACH of NORTHAMPTONSHIRE, England, who came to Newfoundland in 1840. He has given his email address to anyone who wants to write him about his ancestry. It is: mpeach@mb.sympatico.ca

CYRIL PEACH was born in Salmon Cove, Newfoundland, in 1949. He is one of nine children born to MALCOLM and AGNES (Peckham) PEACH. He says, "I believe our roots are in England and that at one time my ancestors went by the name of 'Page', which was later changed to 'Peach'. Cyril now lives in Goose Bay, Labrador, Newfoundland.

ANTHONY PEACH lives in Mt. Pearl, Newfoundland. He grew up in Arnold's Cove, where his parents (HARVEY and VIOLA PEACH) and his grandparents (ALEXANDER and BESSIE PEACH) lived. I can't help but believe he descends from HENRY PEACH who married Matilda Guy ca. 1858. Henry had a son named ARCHIBALD PEACH, who was born in Arnold's Cove ca. 1883. As we find out more from Anthony, we can help solidify this branch.

From the MAINLAND

We have two on board who claim their ancestry in the New World began on Canada's mainland.

CHARLES WOOD of Nova Scotia says, "My great aunt (101 years old in September) tells a story her grandfather, GEORGE JOSEPH PEACH (1841-1925), told her. When he was only 10 or 12, his parents died in a flu epidemic. He went to live with a minister, who was later transferred from Ontario to Nova Scotia. He said he had brothers and sisters he hadn't seen since. George migrated to Nova Scotia ca.1850-1855."

GEOFF PEACH also has roots in Ontario. He says his grandad, HAROLD PEACH, came from England to Ontario in the early 1900s. Meanwhile, Harold had a brother and sister who went to AUSTRALIA. The rest of the family remained in England. Dad was an Anglican minister and Canon of St. Paul's Cathedral in London, Ontario.

Please excuse me if you find typing or grammatical errors in this newsletter. This is the material I wrote about twice in prior Peach Trees that never got sent to you (lost somewhere in cyberspace). So I got up in the middle of the night to try to get it to you once again, and I am doing my best just to keep my eyelids opened.

Although I have to go back to bed to get some sleep so I can go to work today, I felt such a compelling urgency to get this information to you as soon as possible. Next weekend, we will be having company. So I know I wouldn't be able to do a Peach Tree then. Also, now I need to spend a lot of time trying to respond to the 100 emails that never got sent from my AOL Flashsession.

TODD PEACH has provided a new opportunity to improve THE PEACH/PEACHEY PROJECT. It is called ONEList. You can find out about it on our web page. Just go to the bottom of the page and click on ONEList to subscribe. This is an opportunity for you to communicate directly with others who are on board the H.M.S.Peachey without having to direct your mail through me. Thanks so much, Todd.

Until we head for Pevensey Bay, England, I am Sincerely Yours, Captain John H. Peach
